I have a 1988 AQ231b with a 280 out drive that only had a bare shaft (long). The schematic I found on the Volvo-Penta site shows a; Fishing line protector, the prop, a plastic washer/spacer, the prop spinner, and a bolt.
Is the fishing line protector acting as the thrust washer? Are the above 5 parts all I need for mounting a prop on a long shaft?

Yes. The spacer built into the line cutter prevents the prop from hitting the anode/housing.

The shafts are the same length, it's the props that are either long hub or short hub. The hardware depends on which type prop you have.

Yes and yes.
If your 280 prop shaft is threaded for the center spinner locking bolt, your options are open for either long or short hub props by using parts from the 2 pc spinner kit.

The line cutter/spacer actually puts the prop thrust against the shoulder of the prop shaft. The result is keeping the prop from hitting the bearing carrier and ring anode.
As per Don, the shafts [270, 275 vs 280, 290, SP and so on] all net the same length of exposed shaft and splines when the right spacer is used.
The spacer length is different for each shaft length.
Short spacer = 250/270/275.
Long spacer = 280/285/290/SP.

The experience I have had with this may apply. The spacer Don S called out is a heavy flat thick washer that fits in the center of the fishing line protector hub, that is the part that takes the pressure. It usually stays poked in there but can fall out, I have had this experience. The fishing line protector/thrust washer is really two pieces but the schematics I found did not call it out separately, this was confusing to me when it fell out and I was going from memory after I dumped it all into a box and was re-installing several months later :)

Thank you for the help, we do not see many Volvo units in the shop so I only have the schematic to go off of.

This was my first parts order off the "iboats" web site. The prices are much better than the prices NAPA gave me, using the shop "discount". The parts were in my hand in just a couple days for minimal shipping costs. I'm trying to talk the owner of the shop into using "iboats" for parts ordering.
