28hp Johnson Water Pump Installation

I am replacing my water pump, and there is an o-ring in the packet of parts that I can't figure out where to put. The drawing suggests it goes inside the cup over the impeller. But this does not look right; it seems like it will create a gap that will prevent pressure from building up in the cup. Any suggestions?

it will probably help those in the know to know what year your motor is-they made two versions of the 28 that I know of-62-64 and another more modern one. my '62 only has o ring on driveshaft it seems...

Of course, sorry about that. I am pretty sure it is a 1986.

Aha! I figured it out. The o-ring goes into a groove on the bottom of the sleeve for the drive shaft. The ring helps seal the fit between the sleeve and the seat on the top of the water pump housing. I figured it out by looking at a blow up drawing of my motor at www.crowleymarine.com.
