Technology is pretty amazing!!:):D

Sloan Churman, 29, was born deaf. Until recently, she had never heard the sound of her own voice. But thanks to a hearing implant, Churman was finally given that ability.

Watch the powerful video below in which Churman hears herself speaking for the first time.

really? I mean yeah if this is real I'd be like WHOA!!! but it seems staged to me.

why? I know a few people who were born deaf. they are EXCELLENT lip readers. they also sound very nasaly. all of them. she enunciates perfectly AND THE KICKER....she's got her eyes closed but understands AND RESPONDS to the technician while her eyes are closed. she's never heard words before guys! no association with the noises she's hearing, she has no idea how the lips moving and the noises she hears correlates into words...I was all for it until I saw her responding perfectly with her eyes closed.

thats my take on this and it irritates me as I got excited for my cousin and my good friend who are both deaf...until I saw the video.

After 29 years living in silence, a deaf woman gets a cochlear implant.

I guess you didn't read when she went thru that.

Its wasn't like it happened overnight.

Probably jumping to conclusions ... while this may be staged, it just as well may not be and is rather plausible. She's got an implant that's just been activated, so while her eyes are closed the implant is transmitting the therapist's voice. Plenty of deaf folks can annunciate rather well depending on how well they handle vibrations and pick up on them - but she really didn't say enough in the video to say she enunciates perfectly anyhow.

I understand your hesitation, but this is pretty reasonable to be true - or representative of something that has happened.

I will agree with you but I'm still very hesitant. she almost speaks "too" well and at comparible levels to the tech. most times naturally deaf people are either too soft or too loud...not by much but just enough. and I'm still on the fence about her talking/responding to talking with her eyes closed. I dunno, just seems too good to be true to me.

In this day and age - there's a measure of wisdom in skepticism. Being too good to be true is on one hand a sign of a bad deal, and on the other hand the essence of benevolence. It's good to be careful, just make sure you don't miss the rose because of the thorns, ya' know?

hate to be one of the nay sayers (yes i'll admit it could be true) but a bit of background on me. I was born deaf, had 8 surgeries to correct it, and spent years in speech therapy and i'm still on the soft spoken side. Even today there are sound frequencies i can't hear. One of my co-workers has the implants and her voice is still uneven and on the loud side. so with that said yes i'd say either a) there's more to the story than what we know and see or b) it's staged

either way still a good story.

once again providing everything that was written in the article is accurate, and she has had hearing aids since she was a child so she has had some hearing, and most likely speech therapy as well, than, and it's still a big leap for me, I could believe the story to be true. But like I said either way it's still a good story and brings to light new technology to help cure various defects (for a lack of a better term at the moment) such as deafness.

The story is grossly distorted or simply fake (to sell the product?). No way she is hearing herself for the first time. If she had hearing aids since age 2, she was already hearing herself, just not as well as with the cochlear implant. Her speech is absolutely perfect, which is completely inconsistent with the story as presented.
