Ok so I had a marine engineer take a look at some problems, firstly the steering yoke when moved from side to side front to back has a load of play. I suggested it could be the bushings so he changed them, the thing is that after this was done the problem still exists, is this normal for a stern drive of this age, the engineer is off the opinion that the parts have been changed in his words (you?ve tried it, it hasn?t worked so there?s not much more can be done) I thought replacing the bushings would cure this or at least reduce the effects am I wrong???

I was also having a big problem of the gear not disengaging when moved to neutral this was identified as being the sliding sleeve (shift cone???) being worn so this has been replaced along with the dog, it seems to have solved the gear engagement problem, but know the throttle is very stiff to operate, I disconnected the cable from the stern drive side and the throttle moved fine then reconnected and it?s hard to move again. Do I need to give this time to bed in, or would this suggest an installation problem with the cone I?d like to be sure before I have it lifted back in to the water

Sounds to me like you need new cables. Your shift cone probably went out because of the worn cable not putting it all the way into gear. Now you have throttle problems. Change them both and readjust everything to specs.
