Anyone have any idea why someone would install such a thing? The only thing I can think of is to let the heat out or additional air in. Opinions, thoughts? Thanks

Looks like it might be for more air in to me, especially if the top piece is a breather. Why? I have no idea.

We can't figure out why our PO's do things and you want us to tell why your PO did such a silly thing.

I have seen a few outboards where the running light was installed on top of them .

Since the hole appears to be directly over the flywheel nut it just might be an access port for a hand-held mechanical tachometer.

It's funny: I tried to reply two days ago and the forum would not let me--kept replying that there was no content to post.

Frank - This was one of the topics that got snarked by shared photos in the starting post. Replying resulted in an empty response error message. It's working fine now.
