3.0 gear lube question

I dont know much about i/o , I have a 225 outboard but my uncle let us use his boat this week at the lake. We had to add gear lube oil, a couple of ozs for every couple of hours of tubing. The guys were he bought it say thats normal. I'm guessing it isn't. Any help greatly appreciated, the boat is a Mariah 18. I would like help him out, the kids had a ball tubing.

Doesn't make any difference what kind of boat it is, need to know Year, make, and model of engine and drive.

If you have to add gear oil after a couple hours, it means you have a leak......​
