I picked up an old Fiberform with a new(er) Volvo Penta 3.0GS. Quickly learning the new boat owner adage. I've reached a problem I'm not sure I know the cure for, and I'm hoping for some advice here. I'll go for the main issue here, and then provide some history.
The oil pressure at the filter is high. High enough to blow out the seal, high enough to distend the filter if you tighten it a bit more. After reading other posts on here, I tried to read oil pressure off of it with a very short run of oil spray. It looked to get to a steady 40 psi and then spike to beyond gage limit when it geyersed out again. This happens pretty much immediately.
And now the history. I apologize for the length, but I don't want to shoot past something I think isn't connected but would be a giant red flag for the experts here.
I have had fuel issues since I picked this up last fall. Of course, ran great in the guy's yard. Got it home, filled her up and dropped her in the water, no go. Pretty easy to figure out root cause once I undid the fuel filter and drained about a fuel filter's worth of water out of the filter. Took her back home and went to work on her, and she fired right up. No problems at all. Unfortunately, the next time it wouldn't go. Swapped out fuel filter, added some dry gas, got it to start. Then again. At this point, out of time, drained coolant and manifold, waited out the winter in Seattle.
I've gotten back into it this year, and I've had recurring issues. Got her started last weekend, and it ran strong. Maybe a bit too strong. Wouldn't idle below 1500-2000RPM, and even started spurting oil through the breather tube. I think the oil pressure may have read 0 when this was happening. I'm really not sure, as I was trying to figure out the high idle and then the breather spouted, so my memory could be off. I know that previously the pressure had been at a healthy 40psi whenever I actually got it going. Next day, original oil filter blew the seal.
This weekend, I went for it and drained the tank. New plugs, cap, rotor, new oil, new oil filter. Tried to start her up. Blown gasket on new oil filter, distended filter when I tried to reattach and tighten a bit more.
From what I understand there is a pressure relief valve in the pump and one where the filter attaches. From what I've read/seen, it seems the filter relief valve would be more likely, but I'm certainly not 100%. According to the volvo service manual, I can 'Remove the valve by prying it out with a screwdriver'. I don't see how this works. I have attached a picture of the oil filter attachment point.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
