I have a 98 sea ray 175 with a 3.0. The outdrive is 2.0 unit not a 1.98, if that matters. I bought a 14.25x23 turning point hustler prop, but it is too much. It does 37 mph at just under 4000 rpm and wont get any more rpm. The 14.25 x 23 is what searay put on the 3.0 with 2.0 drive according to there archives, but it is too much prop. I plan on using the exchage program for the prop, but I would like some real world knowledge if anyone has any with this combo. The WOT is supposed to be 4400-4800 rpm. Thanks for any help!

What was the old prop and what pitch?
The Hustler prop is very aggressive I wouldn't be surprized that you couldn't make rpm. Also while a really effective prop thay have been unpredictable to the point of wondering if some were misslabeled. It would appear a 19 would put you "about" in the 4.400 to 4,800 range.

What would the result be on top speed, when you acheive that rpm with that pitch? Will I be accelerating faster only to acheive a low mph? My old 17 foot sea ray used to run about 45mph with the 3.0 motor. I would like to see similar results with this one.

From the horsepower curves at GM marine engine specs:

http://www.gm.com/vehicles/innovati...s/specialized/marine/REV_2011_3000_Marine.pdf

A 3.0L makes 130 HP at 4000 RPM. It makes 140 HP at 4800, so letting it spin up will gain you 10 HP.

It takes about 10 HP to gain 1 MPH.

Right now your 23" prop at 37 MPH and 4000 RPM is showing 15% slip.

If you drop to a 19 pitch and get lucky in that it's a little more efficient than the Hustler, you MIGHT end up gaining 3 or 4 MPH and get to the low 40's. A 19" prop at 4800 RPM with 5% slip will get you to 41 MPH. More realistically 10% slip puts you at 39 MPH.

45 MPH ain't gonna be easy.

Re: 3.0 i/o need help with hustler prop pitch

imo your 3.0 with a 17 ft boat should run at least 40 -43 mph but with a 21 or 23" prop. something is amiss with your motor or setup. Is the bottom clean and smooth?
Motor well tuned timed properly and advancing as it should.Throttle plates opening all the way.Good compression? I have seen 3.0s struggle with the Hustler. And as I said before their results can be unpredictable. Is your speed by gps?Was the 45 by gps that seems a little optimistic.

A 23p prop is a lot of prop for a 3.0 engine...A 19 will bring you where you wish to be

We have the same setup on an Bayliner 175 and we run a 13" - 22 P 4blade Piranha prop.
We ski (slalom), wakeboard and cruise with ours and it works really well.
Out WOT is 4750 @ 42 mph (GPS).
With our setup our boat hop's onto plain almost @ the hit of the throttle and
we also run SX Smart Tabs on ours which help,
If your drive is trimmed right and your motor is running right then you should get
better speed, from what i have read on here 14.25"-19P 3 blade would work well.
There are allot of variables to consider, weight (people in boat) full tank of full,
all these will effect your boats performance.
The are allot of posts on here with very similar setups to yours and I'm sure
you'll get some good info from them.

Sorry, for the late response. Chaparral, what kind of numbers were you running with that prop? Where are you located?

Just a quick update.....the 19 pitch came from the turning point exchange program and it spun past 5 grand with 1/4 throttle left in the low 30 mph range not good at all. Got a 21 pitch and still spins past 5 grand with nearly 1/4 throttle left, speed was up to the mid 30 mph range......I give up! Time to go in another direction...open to ideas.

Hmmm I have a very similar hull design 98 Monterey 180 3.0. My setups are 14.25x17 SS Vengence 37.6mph@4900rpm is capable of 5300rpm if I go that far. Also have a 13.75x19 Aluminum thats runs 42.1mph@4950rpm still too much rpm. All these numbers are with 3 people and 10 gallons of fuel.
I would do as stated and check the timing, and carb. You may have a sketchy tach that is reading incorrectly.

Ok lets start here: 1.98...21p.... 5000rpm...Nets 50 thero speed

12% slip gets 42mph...About right for that combo

So you verify the tach from 800 to 4800....If thats ok step 2

You verify the speed with Gps if that ok step 3

Check the bottom of the hull if that ok...step 4

Verify your your drive is not somehow slipping step 5

Stay out of the Bermuda trinagle....;)
