as i have mentioned before in previous posts. i am trying to figure out what i can swap out with. do i have to stay with the 3.0 or can i drop down to a 2.5? if i do the drop in size how much power will i loose? will the boat still be able to pull tubes/skies? or does any one know if the 2.5 has the same block or at least the same crank journal sizes as the 3.0? what i was think about possibally doing or having done is take a 2.5 block (dad has one that has a bad crank that he will give me) and stuffing my 3.0 pistons rods and crank oputting my 3.0 head on it. maybe if need to have the clock line bored to fit the crank then have that done. or if can find a solid running 2.5 out of like an s10 and put all of my marine stuff on it. the only thing is with the research that i have done the s10 2.5 is only rated to right at 100 horse.

i forgot it is 17ft sunchaser 1702 tri hull deck boat with alapha 1 out drive

many thanks in andvance andy

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

Howdy,

IMHO, that boat with the (140hp) 3.0L engine is already underpowered. Putting a 2.5L engine in it will not be good.....

I suspect that you'll have to find yourself another 3.0L engine or another (donor) boat.

Since the 3.0L engine was only used in boats (and forklifts, generators etc) you won't find an automotive equivalent that'll work all that good.

Your other consideration would be to find a boat with a 4.3L V-6 (and matching ratio drive) and do a swap. It would be a fair amount of work if the hull is worth it and the donor boat is cheap enough....

Otherwise, you may just need to part out what you have and find another boat equipped the way you want it.....

Sorry about that,

Rick

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

you would lose 20HP, which is about 15 per cent

why they made that 2.5 well into the 1980's is beyond comprehension.... it couldn't cost more to just manufacture a 3.0
It was the 90's before they realized that.

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

I believe the 2.5 is the same block as the 3.0 with a different bore and stroke, so no you can't just change them over. You would have to do all the comparisons for main bearings to see if the crank fits, then see if the 2.5 can be bored. Much more than it would be worth to me.

LOL maybe you could put the 2.5 pistons on the 3.0 rods with the 3.0 crank and come up with something around a 2.75?:redface::rolleyes::p wooo hooo we got a stroker.

I have a 1983 2.5L in my 16.5' open bow. It will do 33mph (GPS) with 4 people and stuff on board. It works for me and the family. I have no problem pulling 2 tubes or a wakeboarder.

You CANNOT, I repeat, CANNOT USE AN S10 OR ANY 80's GM 2.5L as they are TOTALLY DIFFERENT ENGINES! The one in your boat is a CHEVROLET built engine, the S10 is a PONTIAC ENGINE!

heres a suggestion if you have funds, call forklift dealer preferably (Yale )have them look up a GLP050ZG- tell them it has 3.0 gm motor get a price on new engine not rebuilt-why manufacturer purchases many new engines from gm and never sells them then the sit in warehouse at discount pricing also this 3.0 has been out of use in forklifts almost 10 yrs now, you will have to change some things to make it marine grade, recently purchased brand new mazda d-5 complete engine for under $400.00 for a customer -they call it aged inventory, good luck

Ayuh,... 2 things,...
#1,... Boring a 2.5l to the 3.0l size will put the cylinders Into the cooling passages...
There Ain't that much iron there to bore...

#2,... The s-10 block is TOTALLY Different....

Is repairing the crack with a weld out of the question?

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

many thanks and that is why i am asking the questions here i have checked with rapid amrine and we are talking close to 2250 for a reman and right now i just cant do that as far as just welding it i am gettin water into the oil. i have not had a chance to tear it down yet to find out what is going on there.

i did throw a post up about swapping out the 3.0 for a 5.0/5.7 and got all kind of negitive feed back about doing that. i have checked nada and my boat did come with as large as 8.1 500hp but my gears in the out dirve are wronge. i did check with my local marina and they informed me that yes they would hold up but i would just run the risk of over reving. as i mentioned in the other post i can get the manifolds risers coupler and maybe carb off of a v8 for dirt cheap dad has a truck v8 that runs he would give me and as long as my marine starter bolts up (knowing gm they only use 2 bolt patters) then all i would need to find is a marine distrubator. but i just dont know what to do for sure

but wither way i guess i am done for this season as far as being on the water. on the good news at least this way all should be good for next season

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

no negativity from me - I have converted both my boats to V6's...
no regrets.
A 3.0 is great in a 15 footer. ok in a 16.... after that, it struggles to keep me entertained

i have checked nada and my boat did come with as large as 8.1 500hp

then NADA is wrong.
that would be assisted suicide.
no 17 foot trihull ever left the factory with a 500HP big block... :)

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

If marinized, otherwise the exhaust manifolds will start it on fire.

There are 17 footers that came with a small V8. Other 17 footers would sink or handle dangerously.

Re: 3.0 is shot (cracked) what are my options

i have one inportant question then. what do i need to look for to hook up the exhaust after the manifolds?? is there a "y"pipe to hook both sides together or how does that work. if dome one has a picture that would be of GREAT help here. once again many thanks in advance
