3.0 knock

Have knocking sound coming from rear of engine. Gets louder the quiets down. Motor runs fine except for knock. Good oil pressure and temp. Pulled distributor, everything looked fine
Ran motor with valve cover off. Every thing looked good, good oiling.
Don't think its a rod knock as the knock comes and goes.
Could it be the outdrive and telegraphing the noise?

I DON'T want to pull the motor, but I'm at a loss

could be coupler is going, could be u-joints going

when was the drive last off and alignment checked?
