3.0 litre Omc heating issues (newbie to Inboards)

I have a 1989 cadarette bowrider with 3.0 litre OMC, first time out overheated very quickly but ran fine for an hour or so in driveway with muffs on, i am new to inboards or boating for the fact, any help, i have noticed some postings regarding clogged lines and so forth, any help where to start, cooling system is not a closed system and is a sea water system, i think i have terminology right, any help would be appreciated, I have a seloc manual for the boat

First thing you do is look at the raw water pump impeller on the outdrive. They need replaced as preventive maintenance. Sure hope you didn't keep running it when it was overheating.

no i didnt keep it running after it started to overheat, I will look at the impeller, but what am I looking for with damage or an impeller that is no good, i know way around cars but boats are new to me

at less than $30 for the impeller just change it while it is apart and see if it fixes your problem. they are a routine maintanence item and should be replaced every year or two.

Vanes may be brittle, cracked or broken. If you don't know the history of this boat, change it regardless of what condition it's in. You will need a new o-ring that fits in the housing groove. And make sure the vent hole in the impeller housing isn't plugged.
