Hi,
My boat sank I have rebuilt the engine and got the engine going but have the following list of issues I would like some advice on. The boat is 3.0 liter, year 2001.
1. The belige pump comes on when the float is low and goes of when the float is high. Its working the wrong way. The wiring is correct and I can manual it on with the switch on the dash. Any idea's on why its working the wrong way? The is also a circular black thing away from the pump also on the floor of the engine bay. Don't know what purpose it serves?
2. I opened the return line to the tilt/trim reservoir to drain the fluid. I refilled it to max and it works fine lifting the outdrive but when lowering it the pump makes a funny noise at the bottom and the fluid bubbles. If I take the cap off the reservior there is a vacuum. It still lifts the out drive back up fine. The fluid is Dexron II. Is it just a leak on the return line connection cause i tighten this up good?
3.I dont have the tank connected and the fuel supply to the mechanical fuel pump is through a hose and funnel that is at the same height as the cab. Sometimes when I open the carb throttle it does not squirt fuel into the manifold. If I check for fuel delivery sometime it is delivering fuel to the carb. I haven't done a fuel pressure test. If I lift up the funnel with the fuel when cranking the engine starts and continues to run. Is it that there is enough of a pressure in the head of fuel that the fuel goes straight through the pump and pushes down the carb float? The engine seems to run ok but the fuel pump does not seem to always be working.
4. Do you have to use a shunt to the distributor to set the timing although there is no harness connected to the 4 pins on my distributor? The ignition is an electronic spark timing system.
5. Can water get into the gearbox if it was submerged? I changed the oil and there is no sign of water? I havnt engeged gear in case there has been damaged don by water.
6. I am runing it in the yard with the raw water impeller off and no freshwater supply for periods of 5 mins. Can this do any harm?
All is not bad as I feel good about completely rebuilding the engine. Its just these and a few other issues to be sorted.
Look forward to get some solutions for this message board.
