so ive got my pistons installed, cam installed, rear main seal installed and now im wanting to know about the oil pump assembly. I took it apart to clean it and there was a gasket between the cover and the pump. the manual doesn't mention anything about putting a gasket there when reassembling. im assuming it needs to be there. My gasket set didnt come with one. Where can i get one. the tag on the pump is m62.

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

Most times we replace the oil pump not try to rebuilt it. tolerances are very tight .You make a mistake here and it will cost you an engine. For 30-50 dollars it`s not worth the risk.

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

while waiting for the new oil pump for the motor ive decided to tackle replacing the impeller in the outdrive. i have the seloc manual and it says to remove the propeller. is that necessary to just replace the water pump? also any help or pointers in this area would be very helpful

question about the oil pump on the motor... the m-62 that i want to replace is made by melling. I recognized that number for some reason and realised that older gm's like 60's and 70's have the same number. is that the same pump? can i just buy a m-62 from auto parts store for like a 65 malibu with a m-62 oil pump?

Try a 68 Chevy II Nova with a 153CI 4 cylinder, it's the closest automotive engine to the Mercruiser 3.0.

Do you know what year the II was dropped to only Nova

lower unit.JPGlower unit close.JPGup from under.JPGalright as far as the outdrive goes i figured out that you dont need to remove the prop to change the water pump. Got the lower unit off just fine w/o any hitches. Made sure it was in fwd gear and wiggled and wiggled and wiggled until it slid out. The drive oil looked ok(no water in it and it was probably ready to be changed) but it didnt look like it had 30 someodd ounces in it. looked to be a lot less in the drainpan. Dont know but i will put the correct amount in when i fill it back up. one thing that was bad was when i was removing the last bolt from the water pump housing...IT BROKE....argggg!!! Oh well its not the first broken bolt i have removed. even the old water pump impeller seemed to be in pretty good shape. all in all i felt it went ok.

Nope,

I've bought a couple hard engine parts for my 140HP (3.0L) Mercruiser by ordering them for a 68 Chevy II. There are few automotive parts you can use. Many things that need the be marine rated (alt, water pump, starter, ignition, etc,) so you can't use automotive parts for most things. Or, they won't match up with the 3.0, rods, pistons, cam..

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

Shutters (1) go in the top of the exhaust down pipe. Replace it as it will keep waves and the stern wake from swamping the exhaust,,, and backing up into your engine, hydro locking it.

(Yeah, don't ask how I know.....)

ouch!! yeah i noticed a long time ago that the shutters in the down pipe were missing when i removed the engine.only the stud was still there. Can i reuse those pieces and replace w/new grommets or does that all come in an assembly?

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

there were three studs and two bolts on the head that held on the intake/exhaust manifold. i pulled the studs out to get the machine work done and i dont remember which holes had the studs in them. i dont want to put them in the wrong holes and then later on have to switch them because something mounts on the stud end. can anybody help me out here?

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

I have searched the Merc manual and nowhere does it say or show a diagram of the position of the studs and bolts. My suggestion would be to put the studs in the second hole from the front and the second hole from the back. The idea of the studs is to allow the gasket and manifold to be in place while the bolts are screwed in without the hassle of trying to hold such a heavy item.

HTH,

Chris........
(Try getting the proper Merc manual so you can use the seloc for what it is really worth, firelighters!)

Re: 3.0 lx assembly help

ok so i went outside and started looking at it and noticed that the drive fluid resorvoir bolts on the two most left hand holes on the side of the intake.(looking at it from the side) i think i remember the two studs being there now. DUH. so do the drive fluid resorvoir brackets get bolted on while bolting on the intake ?
