Hello,
I have a 1988 18 foot bowrider.
It has the 3.0 mercruiser with the alpha one, generation one drive.
The past year it has seen a new motor, rebuilt drive, new bellows, gimble brgn, shift cable, recently installed new ignition system ( points, condensor, cap, rotor, wires and plugs ) rebuilt carb, etc.
I've had it on the lake a couple of times this year and all went great, no problems at all. ( thanks to you folks and this forum )
Last time out, I had 2 little problems:
1) when it idles for about 4-5 minutes, it would load up ( run rich ) and stall.
It would start back up and anything above 800 RPM, it was fine. Just at low
idle it would want to run rich.
2) Wide open throttle, it would turn 4200 RPM only. Every other time out, it
would run to 4800 RPM no problem. I have verified the tach is accurate
too.
After getting it home, I found the following:
1) Dwell was at 21 degrees, the book call for 28-32 (maybe 34, I forget now)
2) timing was at 8 degrees BTDC, book calls for 6 BTDC
3) idle RPM was 500-550
I adjusted the points to 22/ 1000ths and it put my dwell at 29
I put my timing back to 6 degrees
I raised my idle to 650
My carb idle-air mixture is correct.
NOW FINALLY TO MY QUESTION (LOL)
Could those 3 adjustments have caused my idle and full throttle problem?
Or could I still have a few gremlins to chase?
My altitude at my house is 2100 feet and the lake I go to is about 3200 feet.
Will I need to lean the carb some for the altitude difference?
Right now on muffs, at my house, the boat runs excellent, will idle with no problem.
The gas tank has been flushed and new fuel lines installed so I think I can eliminate contamination.(??)
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I also apologize for the long post....
Thanks in advance,
wncrjb
