Gentleman, I have a 3.0 merc 1987 model motor I ran on muffs for 30 minutes and it got about a gallon of water in the oil. i have had the manifold and elbow off they looked fine I also had the head and head gasket off and replaced the head gasket. I also repaced the manifold gaskets when i had them off. this was done before i ran the motor last my questions is would a bad manifold or head or elbow put this much water in the oil and should i have them pressure tested before I worry about the block. Also this may sound stupid but is the risers as same as the elbow?

Island Man,

I would certainly condem the manifold and/or riser before I condemed any part of the engine.

You can't always tell by looking at them if they are bad.

Im with djohns...Riser is the first to go then the manifold. Pressure check or just replace them both since its this old.

I don't know Guys.... I see Frost damage to the block.... At the bottom of the water jacket, on the manifold side, in behind the drainplug.....
I don't see water getting to the oil pan With the engine running for 30 minutes... The manifold, or riser(elbow) will allow water into the cylinders,+ eventually to the base, but not while running....
It would be nice if it was the manifold/riser, But I really doubt it....
