Hey everyone new to this site with a quick question, have an 86 Four Winns with a 3.0 Mercruiser 140hp and am wanting to change the lower lag oil. I found the top and bottom screws so draining and adding should not be an issue, but what I can't find is what specific gear oil I should be using, anyone have any advice it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: 3.0 Mercruiser lower lag oil

Howdy,

And welcome to iboats......

Most people will probably suggest Mercury Premium Gear lube or High Performance Gear lube. (A Bravo should get High Performance Gear oil)
http://www.mercurymarine.com/parts-and-accessories/product-overview/precision-lubricants/

You can buy it right here http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Maintena...5411940--**********.999876333--view_id.683364

And a LOT of other places in stores and online.....

It is even sold at Walmart in some areas.

Now, having said that, for most drives, you can probably use any marine gear lubricant or any regular (GL-5) gear lubricant get satisfactory results. Do a search here and you'll find MANY threads with people indicating their experience with their pet brand of oil. (Some will even get emotional about it)

The most important part of the equation is to drain all the old out and fill the drive exactly as the manufacturer instruct in their OEM service manual.

It usually takes about 1 & 1/3 US quarts to do it. I've been using either Mercury brand or Pennzoil, but just about any brand of lower unit oil will do good for you.

My suggestion: buy the hand pump that screws into the top of the plastic bottle to pump it in.

Thanks everyone I did use the stuff I posted the link to (quicksilver) and did buy the pump for $10 and pumped it from the bottom, only took the one Liter (quart) to fill it enough so it came back out the top. Also good news is I had no water or metal shavings!

It should have taken more than the quart. Maybe you didn't drain all the old out? Was the drive trimmed all the way down?

Yes the drive was all the way down, even pulled it up a little to help it drain and then lowered it again and let it sit for over 30 minutes to let it all drain. Screwed oil pump on at the bottom and started pumping, near the end of the quart clean blue oil starting filling out the top air vent. So it must only need the one quart, it's a 140 hp if that matters.
