I have a 1989 3.0 Mercruiser that has a strange problem. The boat has ran fine the first 5 times it has been out this season however the last two times I have been out I have problems. It starts just fine and runs for 20 minutes at all rpm ranges just fine and then out of nowhere it just starts sputtering and dies. It has done the same exact thing both times. After the sputtering I can get it to start up and it will run for a few seconds and then sputter and die again. After the first instance I replaced the fuel pump and obviously that did not fix the problem. The boat has new plugs, wires and cap also. I guess I am leaning towards an ignition problem but I really dont know. Any advice would be appreciated.

The tank was emptied and filled with fresh fuel. The old fuel seemed clean and free of water.
When the engine started sputtering I did try to pour a little fresh gas into the carb and that made no difference.

Check the coil to see if it is getting extremely hot. Make sure the wires are on the correct terminals -to the dist; +to the wire harness.
Also check your fuel tank vent of blockage.

Don't give up on the fuel issue just yet. You replaced the fuel pump but what about the filter and are your fuel cap or vent line open?
