Was out boating yesterday, everything was great, then all of a sudden, motor did a jerk motion, but stayed running then it made a metal to metal sound and quit.
Tried to restart, it started then made the same MtoM sound.
Now it is hard to start, trying to turn over, killing the battery.
Anyone have a clue?
I believe this is my 4th of July curse, never fails every 4th I have boat problems.

I would start with the outdrive. Check the drive oil for metal, water....inspect the prop area. If it looks normal, pull the drive. Check the u-joints, gimble etc. No real way to tell without a physical look.

Pull the drive and see if the engine turns over ok.
If it does, then you have a problem with the drive, if it doesn't you have a problem with the engine.

Tried to start it today, started and ran for about 30 seconds, then made a grind noise then stopped.
Starter now whizzing when trying to start, will catch every 8th or 9th turn of the key.
Could the flywheel have anything to do with the whole motor problem?

You may have damaged the starter or ring gear when you keep trying to start it when it was locked up.
You need to stop starting it and find the problem.
Pull the drive to begin with like mentioned above. Since the start system is now dead, after you get the drive off see if you can turn the engine by hand. You could pull the spark plugs to make it easier to turn over, while you are pulling them, look em over. They could give you an indication of a what the problem is.
