Hey guys, i recently just the boating game, ive worked on cars my hole life but have been told that boats are a different world. Anyways, i bought a 3.0 OMC 4cyl and it does crank but no start, personally it seems to crank slow but im also used to car engines. i know it needs a carbourator and a new alternator, but that still doesnt help, with the fact it seems to turn over slowly. i dont know much, nor where to really start. Any ideas would be really helpful!!!

A boat motor is a truck motor and should turn over the same speed.
Clean both ends of the battery cables to shinny metal. Check your points
Drip a small amount of gas down the carb to see if it fires

Remove all the lines and see if they need cleaning or replacement
Can spray some carb cleaner thru the lines to help

Remove the fuel filter and replace and clean it, but this depends on which filter is installed

okay cool, now the next thing i have is that the previous owner said the shifter cable broke but how can i verify that without taking anything apart or without having the motor running. it that even possible?

Shift into forward and see if the prop locks in one direction, then shift to reverse and see if it also does it.

That said, you should remove the drive, drain the gear lube and replace the impeller in the drive, and may need to rebuild the pump.

Pressure test the drive after impeller replacement at 10 psi and check for leaks

Then check gimbal bearing and alignment

So if it does lock into place thats a good sign? and if it doesnt then its not ?

If it doesn't lock then the cable is broken or something is disconnected

Most 3.0 used the holley 2bbl, or Rochester 2GC carb
Only way to know for sure is if you can give us the serial number of the motor
