3.0 removal

I am looking at a sea ray that will need a motor swap. There is enough room for three to eat dinner in the engine compartment. My question to all of you is;<br />is there enough room to remove all solenoids and wiring without disconnecting and marking each wire. In other words, I can remove the battery, and remove certain electrical components without having to mark every wires location, then re attaching them to the new block. I will be long blocking an OMC engine in it's place. I do not yet have a manual for the Merc, but will have one in hand when I start. Just trying to get a head start in between the ears. -Thanks

I would disconnect as little as possible. When I replaced my 3.8's block, I even left all starter connections in tact. I carefully lowered everything to the floor around the engine.. just wanna make sure nothing tugs a wire out of it's terminal or something that could make for major troubleshooting afterwards..

Just unplug the main harness connector. Then when you have the engine out, transfer all the wiring to the new engine. Then put it back in. And if you don't know where all the wires go, for gawds sake mark them. What's wrong with that? Take pictures, any thing that will help. DO you have a manual? It's only a 3.0L carbed engine, the wiring isn't that complicated.

I looked at the OMC manual tonight, read the removal / reinstallation chapter (again), and the troubleshooting one, in case the motor can be salvaged. Your right, it's not that complicated, except when you don't normally have your head in the engine room, a wife, 5 kids calling you every three minutes, the phone, 2 german shepherds.........life is too complicated. One false wire goes loose and poof, it's gone!

Sorry for being blunt, but with all that going on maybe working on the boat should be done by someone else.<br /><br />You probably don't work on your cars and trucks engines, so why is it you work on your boat engine? Boats are just as complicated as the automotive side of mechanics, only now people think because it's a toy everyone should be able to work on them.........

I do most of my own work, and I appreciate your bluntness. You have plenty of experience and I value your input. No need to excuse yourself. I was just trying to find out how much slack the wiring might have, since I don't have the boat in front of me. It's about an hour and 10 minutes from here with a for sale sign on it.<br /><br />My next question is, the boat overheated and since will not start, (3 weeks ago). When you start the engine it cranks but will not attempt to fire. It seems to turn slower than I think it should. He said it had a knocking noise so he shut it down and got towed in. Could this be a head gasket blown? I think it's odd that it was shut down manually, and never ran again. With the knock I rule out it being an electrical (he may have worn the battery trying to restart in the water) I know there are several things, but obviously one of the combustion axioms is missing. <br /><br />Thanks, and thanks to you Don for your expertise and bluntness. Sometimes it's the kick in the a@@ we need!

I Wouldn't count on Any salvageable internal parts from that motor,........<br />It Sounds like a Severe Over-Heat,......<br />Pistons Fused to Cylinder Walls,......<br />Spun Main,+ Rod Bearings,....... <br /><br />I see a Blown Head Gasket as Wishful Thinking..........
