Re: 3.0 starter clicking

is it possible to crank start the boat and bypass the starter and soleniods all together... i would love to get some runs in on my wake board before going crazy and spending another buck fifty on a starter...

Does that solenoid you are describing that has the wire going to the center of the distributor look like this?

Jdizzil,
I have a tough time believing you are blowing through starters so quickly.

You should disconnect each wire (one at a time) in the starter circuit and clean each connector with emery cloth (sand paper).

It IS possible to do some bypassing, i.e. you can bypass the Starter Solenoid, the electrical piece not near the starter itself.

If your Solenoid (mounted on your starter) is bad, there's no way to get the motor started, because the solenoid has to kick the bendex. Sometimes if your starter or solenoid is going bad you can hit it with a wrench (or hammer) and it might give you a few starts before it completely dies.

Bottom Line: Clean your contacts, and that bizzle will start for shizzle and wake's in the Hizzle. Or something like that.

Re: 3.0 starter clicking

its gotta be the seleniod on the starter... it didnt start in the water.. i pull it out try it again and it did... then back in the water nothing... then hit it with wrench and it works... back in the water nothing.. and i have hit it many times since then, nothing...

the thing about the wires though i sanded and greased all connections including the ground and battery the first time this happened and then replaced starter... (white lithium grease)

ohh that is the diagram of the thingy thats clicking...

you guys are off the hizzil 4 shizzil...

That diagram is the diagram of the coil, not the solenoid.
I think it might save you a lot of money in starters if you take your boat to a real Mercruiser marine mechanic.

I think Don's in a jovial mood, that's an ignition coil. If it's on your starter motor you've got problems.

Connect a voltage meter onto the main starter motor soleniod terminal (NOT the ignition coil), crank the engine (even if it just clicks). What's the reading?

Aldo

Re: 3.0 starter clicking

i dont really remember but it like 9 or higher when i volt metered it the yellow and red going to the small top nut on the starter soleniod... there is definitly juice going to the starter soleniod but the ignition coil clicks one time ever key turn
