Hey all. I believe I have a seized power steering pump. I noticed engine temp climbing on the lake and shut it down. I started it back up with engine compartment open and saw the belt was static. I towed back in and now I’m in the garage.

After removing the belt, the circulation pump and alternator rotate freely but the power steering pulley is frozen. The raw water pump is on the cam shaft in this engine. I’m planning on ordering a replacement power steering pump unless this model has replaceable bearings or something.

I thought this was a good time to check the impeller, so I pull it apart and notice it looks like the previous owner used a gasket maker on the pump housing. The impeller looks to be in fine shape, but should I just order an impeller kit with gaskets and all to be safe? I assume I need to meticulously clean up the bits and pieces of the gasket maker inside the pump so they don’t work into the engine, correct?

I attached photos.

Thanks in advance for your guys knowledge!

most likely a Saginaw pump unit, standard GM replacement. Just reuse your pump cover and swap the pully

Awesome, thank you. That answers one of my questions. Anybody have any insight on the impeller rebuild and the blue gasket maker stuff that’s currently on there?

It's just a paper gasket for the impeller. Comes with the impeller kit. You are replacing it right? Hopefully who ever put on all the gasket sealer didn't work on the rest of the boat much.

What is a good resource for finding replacement part numbers like the impeller kit and the power steering pump?

just google saginaw power steering pump. your local napa will have one for $50 without the reservoir. a rebuild kit is $14. you will need to use your reservoir. if you buy it from a volvo marine dealer its like $600 (yes, it is seriously marked up that much_

for the impeller, I normally use the iboats link to volvopentastore and get the part number. however you have a johnson pump. the part number for the pump is also stamped on the front cover of the pump. google it to find the impeller kit.

Thanks for all the info everybody. Got the power steering pump rebuilt and everything put back together. Fired it up and as expected, the impeller is leaking because I took the gasket maker apart. Looks like I’m off to order an impeller kit and we should be good to go!

For the ps pump, I took the reservoir apart and replaced the pump ($30 at the auto parts store) and reinstalled everything. Thanks for your guys advice on that.

And it looks like I now have a leaking power steering hose to replace, hence the dry, seized pump. Can I replace the pressure hose with an automotive one as well?

Take the hose to your local hydraulic shop

The VolvoPentastore.com diagram does not show the ps hoses, is there another resource I can find a part number from? I doubt the high pressure hose can be repaired, correct?
I just looked at a random 3.0GS, since I don't know your model number. I saw one. You have to look in the steering section.

Thanks. I have the 3.0GSPEFS engine. I just looked through all of the 1994-2000 3.0 GS engines and of course my engine is the only one without the hoses depicted on the diagram. All other GS engines in that group use the same hose part number, so I should be good to go with that replacement hose.

Update on the repair:

I sourced the hose leak to the low pressure return line luckily. Replaced that today and noticed a leak on the actuator rod seal. I did some research and found this kit for repair:

I was able to remove the actuator following this tutorial on YouTube:
- Could have been worse but still quite a pain since it is located behind the engine and the 15/16” mounting bolts required a serious amount of torque to break free.

Anybody with experience rebuilding these?

Update:
I purchased the rebuild kit that I posted earlier. Perfect kit delivered super quickly with very detailed instructions. I was able to rebuild the actuator and reinstall it. Hooked everything back up and we have a functioning power steering system again! The hardest part was removing the actuator from behind the engine. Here are a couple of helpful links I referenced:

Thanks everybody for your help!
