Re: 3.0L Merc 130 or 140 hp?

I just remembered the 140hp is now the 135hp p/s rated and I believe its the only 4 banger available, The 3.0 130 to 140 would more than likley have different carburation I had a 140 3.0 in 1984 I never really looked at the differance of 130hp model and any 130hp 3.0 I saw were OMC and my 140 was a merc, I can only recall seeing a 2.5 120 merc or a 140hp 3.0 merc so are you comparing the 130omc to a 140merc? or a Merc to Merc? If merc to merc I would think Carb since its the most efficient method to grab a few extra ponies.

Thanks for the reply
My eng is def a 3.0L mercruiser and shows its rated at 130HP on the airbox plastic cover.
Most 3.0L engines in the UK seem to be described as 140HP.
I think its about a 1990-91 model.
The carb is a Mercarb.

engine model mcm140mr 140 hp according to seloc manual. I think, although I may be wrong. The 130 hp comes from the actual prop hp.The rest (10hp) is used to operate the other stuff on your engine.(water pump, alternater etc). Maybe someone else can clarify this issue better than me.(Bondo).

jim

My guess is that cuzner is on the Right Track........ ;)
I think it has More to do with Where the HP #s are arrived from,
Rather than the amount of Total HP available.........
If Anything, Base Flywheel HP has Probably gone Up, Slightly, with the Newer Igntions, etc.......

Hello, Regardless of what the manufacture claims you will always have a bit less HP at the final stage. You have to take into account the small losses you have to deal with such as belt driven accessories, where gears mesh, and loss from the prop itself. Most small boats like mine have a standard three blade aluminum prop. It is a compromise between performance and economy. It's cheap to make and common. That's why upgrading your prop will always help performance somewhat. Didn't mean to get off track here. Just trying to make you realize that you probably will not have the exact listed HP at the end of your drive. Real world HP will always be a bit less. Unless you are in to serious high performance. Then we're talking blueprinted motors and dyno testing. But that's a whole other story......and budget! :D
