I have an '89 3.0L Merc. I removed the exhaust riser from the exhaust manifold. My question is do I need to use a gasket cement when reconnecting these 2 parts? I have a new gasket and cleaned all the old gasket off the parts. It seemed like the old gasket was stuck on the parts real good like it was glued on. I got to thinking if I don't make this a good seal, I will end up with water in the cylinders.
Another question is the 2 bolts that hold these parts together look a little rusted. The parts guy said brush them off and they will be fine. I'd rather use fresh bolts. I found some stainless steel bolts. Will they be stong enough or should I find something else that is hardened?
Now if anyone is interested I will tell why I separated these parts to begin with. I was winterizing and attempted to take out the manifold drain plug. Previous owner rounded off the brass plug. I tried to grab it with a pair of vise grips but couldn't get a good hold on it and just made it worse. I decided the only way I would be able to get the plug out would be to remove the manifold. After removing the riser I got to thinking and took a wet vac and was able to suck out the water by removing the hose on the thermostat housing. I now can fill it back up with antifreeze to keep any water that is left from freezing. This is my first winter with this boat, so next year will be much easier and I won't have to take the riser off again.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
