Can you replace a 1986 2-barrel mercarb with a newer version? People are selling their new mercarbs for turnkey systems. Will these work on an 86?

What I mean to say is can I put the new mercarb (not turnkey) on my 86.

The best bet is buying a new or rebuilt one that is the same UNLESS you can do a proper DIY dealing with what ever changed

Re: 3.0L Mercarb replacement

You would have to research each one to varify it came from a 3.0L, and not a V6 or SBC. Even if off a 3.0l, you will need to check size and jets, etc to see if same. Newer models will have elec choke and tamper proof mixture screws. Linkages and fuel line connection are probably ok, but need to check. Then there is always, how long did it sit with gas in it? Will it need rebuilding/cleaning anyway?

Throw the dice, or rebuild what you have.

Re: 3.0L Mercarb replacement

While rebuilding my Mercarb I found a hole in the fuel bowl. Patched it with JB weld and put it back on the boat all rebuilt and it basically runs the same as before. When I throttle up it bogs. If I throttle up extremely slowly it powers up accordingly. I re-adjusted the float higher and it ran slightly better. After reading another post I'm actually wondering if it might be my fuel pump. I realize I can't leave that carb on my boat so it's coming off this spring. Any ideas as to how to proceed? Thanks

Purchace the proper carb, avoid the hassle of making a "one off" setup that no one can figure out later.
