I purchased a 2004 Bayliner 175 with a 3.0L Mercruiser engine at the end of last season. Whenever I shift it into gear, either forwards or reverse, it makes a loud knock noise or a jolt. It almost feels like it is slamming into gear. It has done this since I bought it and doesn't seem to affect anything. It still drives perfect but I have always wondered whether this was normal or not. This is my first boat so any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Mercs use dog clutches and do slam into gear. this is why it is critical to have the idle down to around 650 or whatever the 2004 manual calls for. If the engagement seems excessively harsh, check your idle speed.
