3.0L Motor Mounts Failed? Now What??

Okay, on the lake on our way back to marina and boat starts to like stall out. I could increase rpm but the boat was slowing down. Stopped and could smell burning. Checked engine area and smoke coming from back of the engine. The shaft coming out from the engine to the drive was smoking in that area. Sat for a bit then started and tried "limping back to marina" Got pretty close then came almost no forward thrust, temp was also climbing, when temp gauge got to just above 200 I cut the engine and we sat until flagging someone for a tow. Looking later, I see the board where the front of the engine mounts to has collapsed down and the motor is a couple inches lower than it should be, I hope you can tell in the pics. Also, the bolts for the rear also look off, but not sure if that is from the front. A guy at the marina told me if its just the front, the motor may not have to be pulled. He also mentioned it probably messed up the gimball bearing? Does anyone have any thoughts on what kind of damage or things that can get messed up from something like this happening. Can the board that the motor mounts to just fail like that? Am going to try and take somewhere this week for an estimate, but I like to have a general idea for myself ahead of time. Thanks for any input...

This has def been the year of boat maintenance :( LOL!!!

Your engine mounts and likely your stringers are rotten, and therefore have to be removed and replaced to fix this. You have to pull the engine to fix them. Your mechanic is wrong about not pulling the engine.

And, your gimbal bearing just became the least of your technical glitches, and yes, it's probably toast.

See my site (in my signature) for details on the repair process.

I'm guessing that with the misalignment, your loss of thrust despite higher RPMs that your coupler is toast. That would account for smoke from the back of the engine.

And since you are down this far the gimbal brg is sure to be stressed so I would do it also.

You may get away with a piece of aluminum angle to span the cross member and install the motor mount on top of this. Just be sure to adjust the mount to compensate for the additional height of the aluminum.

Note the order of the rear mount "stack" of spring, washer, fiber washer, spacer... Must be reinstalled in exactly the same order or your engine wont line up.
