3.0L OMC rotor loose

I have searched but haven't found this one addressed. The rotor in my distributor does not fit snug. I can move it side to side without the shaft moving as well as I can rock it back and fourth. <br /> <br />The motor seems to run strong but this bothers me. Is it a problem? The old rotor is a factory part. I purchased a tune up kit from my Four Winns deler. It is Johnson/Evinrude parts. Both rotors are sloppy on the shaft. <br /><br />I pulled the plugs and found 1 & 2 normal looking with 3 & 4 white with small brown/black spots on one side of the porcelain. When I got the boat, about two months ago, the points were set to .022. I set them to .019 and checked the dwell which is now 31.3.<br /><br />Boat is 1988 Four Winns 160 Freedom with 1988 OMC Cobra 3.0L I/O (Very Clean and well cared for)<br /><br />Any help or comments will be appreciated.

idaho, I have a 3.0 from 1985 that has the same problem. It ran fine though as does yours. As I recall, I ended up wrapping foil around the shaft and pushed the rotor on and it is now snug. You may need to experiment with how much foil to use depending on how loose it is. <br />Hopefully someone else may have a better fix.

I'm not Sure I'm thinking of the Same Dist.,<br />But, I seem to remember working on a little 4-banger,+ There was a Tiny Little Clip that rides on the top of the shaft, Under the Rotor Button......<br />I Think that Both of you guys are Missing That Piece..........<br /><br />Unfortunately, I don't have a reference to check here........<br />Maybe 1 of the other guys has a Parts Schematic for it........<br /><br />It's Definitely Not supposed to be Loose........ :rolleyes:

Thanks for the info.<br /><br />I'm very interested if anyone has a Parts Schematic for it that they could post.<br />Although I really need to get a manual for this boat anyway and and assume that one would be in there.

Here is a link to a page that shows a 1988 3.0 ltr distributor, can't tell if the piece you are talking about is # 11 or not. 1988 3.0 distributor
