Ok here's the tale of woe. I just got done replacing the #3 piston on a
friends 1999 3.0L EFI. All went well, and with some creative use of magnets,
string and assembly lube, I managed to swap out the piston by just pulling
the intake manifold and not splitting the block. Went very well, all things
considered.
Powerhead is back on the boat and mostly dressed. By total luck I happened
to notice that the #5 piston has a broken top ring - no wall damage yet, the
light just caught it right by the exhaust port is all. And yes I'm sure the
ring is hosed.
I just ordered a pair of rings and 2 new rod-bolts for #5. A couple of
racing types that live near me on Lake Harwell tell me that the "real" race
techs can swap out a 3.0L piston "on the fly" using much the same method as
I did with #3, only with the powerhead still on the leg. Doing it like this,
gravity isn't as much in my favor as it was for #3. (so I'm real nervous)
My QUESTION is... who's done it? How hard?? Any tips or pitfalls to watch
out for? How many magnets?
Thanks -Wayne (Not often nervous)
