Hi All, I was trying to set the timing on this motor the other day.

What I did was I verified pot 1 TDC using the finger in the plug hole technique for firing stroke, then fond the notch in the crank pulley was visible so I marked it white.

I then connected a jumper wire between the 2 white wires on the dizzy.
I then snipped the black wire from the dizzy that connects to the green / white interup wire and sent the black wire to the hot post on the starter - now will this work to get it to base timing mode ?I did not hear a change in the engine rpm or note at all but assume that it will have the same effect that joining the engine loom wires for the shift interup will have as its 12V to the dizzy wire ?

I then checked with the strobe and it seemed to be 1-2 degrees ATDC so reset it to 1 degree BTDC.

I then disconnected the black wire from 12V ran to 2300 rpm and it red 12 or so degrees BTDC.

I am really not sure if it entered base timing - is there any way other than the idle speed to verify that it has gone in to base timing ? Could it be stuck in base timing mode ?

Many thanks in advance.

Your base timing mode sounds right

The 1-2 ATDC could be correct, but also what you set it at could be correct, it all depends on what your serial number is

Thanks alldodge, according to the flame arrestor plate - 1 degree BTDC.

Its confirmation of base mode that I need. How do I know if its gone in to base timing mode or not ?

Thanks in advance

There is an easier way to get in base timing, but connecting to the bat is another

When 12V is removed the timing should change from what it was set at. Compare the t EST Timing.jpgEST 3.0 Timing Curve.jpg iming curve

Ok so I’ll go run her up to temp, loop the white wires, disconnect the interupt green / white and purple and join the engine harness side together - check timing then check again when the loop is removed and interupt reconnected - I guess that is what you meant
