Hi Guys UK Calling
Right here goes,
1995 3.0LX Serial Number OF554183
Last year was my first year owning a boat, ran great all year at the end of season I winterized it as per manual, drained all water using drain cocks.

Last weekend started here up on using muffs and she started overheating but I blamed it on poor water supply to muffs,so decided that the following week to make up a tank to to drop the leg in,started her up and still she over heated no water coming out of either ports.

So decided to remove lower leg to check impeller, when i removed leg the remains of one half exhaust shutter fell out.
The impeller was ok but decided to change impeller and gaskets, then i started to remove the exhaust elbow (raiser) but the bolts snapped,no problem as I can take the manifold into work and repair.removed the bellows and removed the remains of shutters.

Remove water pump this also looked ok but going to fit a new one just in-case as it is rusted up,also going to fit new thermostat.

still not found anything that would cause overheating, what else should I check.how do I check good water supply is getting up to the Engine.

Which is best muffs or tank full of water.

Please help going back up to the caravan this weekend.

Cheers

Taza

Did the vanes straighten out on the old impeller after you removed it? If not, that probably caused the overheat. The flexing and straighting of the blades is what pumps the water.

Re: 3.0LX Overheating problem

Hi Don
yes the impeller vanes straightend out,got the broken bolts out this morning :)
I have fitted new impeller.
Just bought new water pump and thermostat.
Going the caravan this weekend to fit parts, what other checks can I try before starting th Engine up.

The riser is off the Engine now,if I poor water down the pipe should water come out of the two holes either side of the transom,

What is best when checking Engine a put leg in tank of water or run on Muffs,if in tank of water how high up the leg should the water be.Above the impeller or just cover the intake grills.

What is normal running temperature

Cheers

Re: 3.0LX Overheating problem

Muffs with adequate water pressure will be fine, If using a tank system water level MUST be above the water pump.
temp 130-140

Cheers Guys
1.Whilst I have the lower leg off could I run the Engine if I connect hose to the pickup tube.

2.Without Engine running If I connect hose to pick up tube then turn water on should I get water comming out of relief ports.Or does the Engine have to be running and warms up the thermostat which then allows water to flow through the Exhaust manifold then out of the relief ports.

1. Yes you can connect the pickup tube to a water supply and should see it exit through the outdrive.

2. You should get some water since there is a bypass tube for the thermostat. The water always flows through the manifolds when the outdrive is turning.

Did you ever find the other half of the shutter?

Water to the pickup tube should tell you whether it is water supply side (outdrive) or engine side (thermostat, waterpump, mainfold, timing, etc.).

Yes I found the other half of the shutter valve.as a matter of precaution I will be changing the following parts,as the boat has been ran in salt water since 1995.
1.New Impeller & gaskets
2.Shutter valves
3.Thermostat
4.Exhaust riser (a lot of rust-not checked the flow as its at my caravan, but after reading lots of post just going to change it.)
5.Water pump
6.Will change Exhaust manifold at the end of season,no ristrictions but a lot of rust.

any other advice really appreciated

When fitting exhaust manifold,Riser and water pump gaskets should I use any sealant,if so which one.

?"If I connect hose to pick up tube then turn water on should I get water "

If I read that correctly you wany to connect a hose to the copper tube in the upper unit still attached to the boat. You can but remember that the upper unit has no oil in it and the gears have no preload.Best to remove the upper and put the hose in the water inlet itself.

Before I start the Engine up should I fill head & Exhaust manifold with water first,
any other checks I should do.

Ayuh,... The shutter goes so it opens easily in the direction of flow...

If you muff the drive, or launch the boat, it'll fill the motor, 'n manifold by itself when you start it...

Re: 3.0LX Overheating problem

Just like to thank all who replied to all my questions,Went down the caravan weekend and fitted all parts and Engine ran like a dream, never got above 150 all day.
First I ran on muffs no problem.
went out all day ran great, then ran inside tub with water just covering intake holes (tub not deep enough)ran great.

So big thanks once again

Just wish everyone else would reply with the end results,as I read loads of post regarding problems then they don't bother to let everyone know if they have fixed the problem.

Cheers
