I have a circa 1987? 3.5 hp Mariner trolling motor. Operated for the first time a few weeks back and it stalled, unless it was at 3/4 to full choke.

Took out the carburetor and cleaned thoroughly, including the needle valves. Operated again this past weekend. Worked perfectly with choke setting at about the same choke settings.

Is there a simple adjustment I am overlooking, or is there a, more than likely, basic fuel flow function I am not taking into account?

Re: 3.5 HP Mariner

You might want to soak the carb in cleaner overnight. Make sure the O-ring in the back of the carb is good.

Make sure all the fuel lines/filters and tank are clean. I have a 2 hp Suzuki and there is a fuel filter in the fuel petcock and an additional one where the fuel line connects to the carb.

My Suzuki was doing the same thing as yours and I forgot to open the air valve on the gas cap. OOPS

I will take apart the carb and soak, along with cleaning the entire fuel system. BTW, the vent was open, as this is the first thing I checked :)

I took apart the entire fuel system and cleaned thoroughly, soaking the carb (apart) for 36 hours in carb cleaner. Checked the O-ring. Intact and in good shape.

Tested the motor and it still will not run without the choke partially engaged.

Tried to adjust the mixture, from 1 to 1.5 turns with no luck. Any ideas?!

I have a 3.5mariner four stroke and had to open the low speed mixture screw a good few turns (i think 3) to stop my engine from bogging out. Adjust the idle screw first so it is ticking over nicely at idle and put her into gear when warm and open mixture screw until she runs normally. Took me a while to get it right but she is running great now. Cleaned the carb well but I think it didnt make much of a difference in my case.
