3.5hp dies at higher speeds when low fuel in tank

On my last outing a couple of days ago, my 3.5hp ran for a bit at high speed (3/4 throttle) for a while but then started to die. I checked the tank and found it to be 1/5 full. It could run at idle or just above idle but would die when throttled up. (The carb was recently cleaned/rebuilt.) So I just topped her off with gas to see if that'd help. And it did. I cruised at a higher speed no problem then.

Does this mean my fuel pump is going bad? I'm assuming a full tank of gas puts more gravitational pressure on the gas as it makes it ways through the fuel lines. Does anyone have an idea what's happening?

No, it more likely means your tank probably has an issue with the pickup and your probably sucking air, or you have water in the tank

Fuel pump doesnt care if your tank is full or nearly empty.

However your issue is fuel system related

Pull the pickup and make sure you can pull fuel when the level is low

Check the contents of your tank
