I have acquired an older Sear 3.6 HP Outboard motor that I think was made in the 1960's. The chasses number that I got off of it is #21758511. I have just looked at this motor and found out the only things I needed to do was change the spark plugs, buy a new prop and get a gas tank with line. I have a couple of questions however. First, does the lower unit use oil? Second, what is the year on this motor? Third, the tank at the top, is it for oil or gas or both because there is a connecto on the motor for an external tank and I was curious if there were two options as to run this motor with the internal tank as one or having an external tank. Any additional information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help, I will be able to add the foot oil as well as mix up some for the motor to run on. Is this a water cooled motor or an air cooled motor?

When I try to start the motor, it will not start. I have changed the spark plug so I know it is not the plug. However, I do not think I am getting a spark. Would I just have to remove the flywheel and clean the contacts to get a spark or what would I have to do?

The powerhead is aircooled but the leg is water-cooled. That cooling must occur for actual use...but you don't need to worry too much about it for your repair trials.

I looked at the parts diagram I linked to earlier and it does not appear that your motor has points. It has a magneto assembly. Hopefully someone else here can suggest a procedure for testing that. In the meantime I would pull the flywheel and look for the obvious: broken wires and/or bad ground connections; that sort of thing.

Good Luck.

Re: 3.6 Sears Outboard

Where can I find a new fuel filter for the external tank on this motor? Also, the prop needs to be replaced, any thoughts on where I could look for one of those? To connect the external tank, would I just go to walmart and buy a hose and ball and connect to the fuel tank and motor or would I need a special fitting for the end of my fuel line to connect to this motor? Any help would be appreciated.
