3.7 carb question

My 3.7 is starting hard, backfiring a little and stalls after about 5 seconds. I figure it's the carb and my brother, a ford mechanic, says I can throw another 2bbl carb on there and I should be fine. Any thoughts? My issue is, I can't afford the $500 + for a rebuilt 1389 carb and I don't trust my rebuilding skills. I really need this boat running for next weekend's camping trip.

Any help would be great.

Rebuild kit at Napa is $76.00 then have your Ford mech do it.
Takes about an hour and a half.

He says he's too busy. I know I can get a new carb at a decent price, I'm just not sure WHAT carb or even how good an idea it might be.

Re: 3.7 carb question

If its a new one for that engine and is a marine one then do it.
If its an auto one then dont. any insurance may be voided.
If you can take it off the carb and read the instructions then you can rebuild it.

The basics,
Read the instructions
Dont loose the check balls (the napa kits comes with new ones), replace the accelerator pump (also in the napa kit), and get a can of carb dip.

The steps,
Read the instructions again.
Dissamble the carb and place all parts on a clean rag, set them in groups as they come off.
Remove all stuck gasket pieces and soak the carb and parts in the dip for an hour. You may have to do some parts, then do the rest.
Rinse with water and blow dry with air compresser. Let the parts air dry for a bit.
While you are waiting read the instructions again. Then reassemble per the instructions.
Did I mention, read the instructions?

They are not hard to do at all. Once you have done one you feel better about it.

For my money its a no brainer, rebuild it. Save the 400 for gas.

Always be careful when buying a rebuilt carb.
Most rebuilt ones are factory ones that did not pass the inspection at the factory and were tossed out, a "rebuilder" bought them for pennys and tossed in a cheap kit. Then sells them as rebuilt to parts houses. With a lifetime replacement gaurantee, but if you 10 in a row that are junk then how good is the gaurantee? He has his money and all you have a broken carb.

Re: 3.7 carb question

rebuild done. So far so good.... I think. The next issue was the impeller, which I changed. Now it's timing or something... I think. I'll address it in another post. Thanks for the help.
