I have a 1985 MCM190, 3.7L I cannot get the motor to turn over at all. I have tried with the starter as well as by hand. I have removed the spark plugs and pulled the outdrive off but neither had any effect. The engine has an integrated alternator on the front of the crankshaft so there is no place to get a socket / breaker bar on it. I did however get a crowbar between the three smaller bolts and tried to turn by hand. Didn"t turn but put enough pressure on it to break off one of the bolts. So here's my question, Am I screwed or is there something else I should check ? Is there anything in the shift linkage that would cause the motor to be locked in place ?

Howdy,

If you removed the drive and it's still locked up, you have a frozen engine.

It needs to come out.

Agreed...you can try and I mean try attempting to loosen the engine by removing the plugs and squirting some kind of oil in there to maybe penetrate into the rings and loosen its hold. BUT this is a maybe..not to mentioneven if its freed, the rust may score the engine walls and make a huge issue in itself. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks guys for the replies. I sprayed some wd 40 in the sparkplug holes earlier today. I'm hoping that it will soak through and ill be able to break it loose later today. I am pretty sure that the rings are rusted to the cyl wall because i discovered "water" in the number 4 cyl. Il let you know if i have any luck.

WD-40 isnt a rust penetrant, it's a "Water Dispersement", I would get a can of some real rust breaker and let it soak for an hour, and spray some more in there. that's a 4" (rough) cylinder bore so a quick little spray isn't enough.

Yeah 470's end to leak into that #4 cyl..Probably bad head gasket or bad riser gasket. Was the porcelain on the #4 plug white? Sure sign of water intrusion. Good luck.

Could be a possible magnet from behind the Stator (harmonic balancer) which got loose and is jammed.

Just a slight possibility, but worth a look before removal.
