Re: 3.8 to 4.3 swap can it be done

1985.5 to 1986.5 were the only 4.3's with 2 piece rear main seal
your 800 series drive coupler will not bolt up to a chevy with the 1 pc rear main as the crankshaft bolt pattern is different, so you cannot use an engine any newer than 1986
there was never a coupler made that could solve that issue

mods if you find a 1985 or early 1986 4.3:
new exhaust manifolds, risers, and piping - budget $1500 for OSCO brand conversion (OSCO the only brand that will clear the selectrim engine mount trim rams)
the original 3.8 OMC rear riser manifolds will not clear the wider heads/valvetrain of the 4.3

ignition- need an even firing distributor - an electronic ignition (marine) can be had new for around $350 with ESA. or can convert your 3.8 one with a 4.3 Pertronix kit for around $250 including the electronic-compatible ESA

much better to just replace the 229.... you will drive yourself nutty wading through the mountains of 1 pc rear main 4.3's trying to find the rare 1 year only 2 pc rear main 4.3

can your 229 not be rebuilt? cracked block?
