3.9 mercury stuck in gear

I can't get it to shift into neutral. I have ordered a manual but it will take some time to get here. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to get it unstuck or am I going to have to pull lower unit to get it unstuck. I might as well put a impeller kit in if I do that. I traded for this and looked it over real good seems like everything and lower unit is in good shape. I'ts got good compression. So I'm going to try and fix her up.

have you tried to turn the prop while trying to shift it?

Remove the lower unit 2 nuts and ck the shift function at the lower shift shaft. Someone may have had the unit off and not lined up the shift shafts when the unit was reinstalled or in a few cases the spines on the lower shaft are stripped of (rusted) if it shifts alright of the engine line the shafts and reinstall
