Looking to upgrade to a newer 25HP. The motor I'm shopping is a 2005 Suzuki triple 25. I want to make sure I can go far on my 6 gallon gas can without taking up more room in my boat. I'm not looking to save gas for money reasons, just want to get good range out of my rig. Does a triple burn significant more fuel that a 2 cylinder 2 stroke? I have a 14ft Flat boat or Jon boat some call it. Any drawbacks to this year and model? Anything to look out for? Thanks for any help, I really do appreciate you guys on here and the knowledge/experience you all have!

short answer is no .in theory at wide open throttle both will use approx. 2.5 gallons of gas in a hour.the triple might even be smoother at low speeds.at trolling speeds the difference will be very little between the 2.

These trip cyl motors are very powerfull and yes more heavy on juice, 3 carbs need alot of fuel ....

Re: 3 cylinder 25 vs 2 cylinder 25 Fuel Consumption

My Yamaha C40 3 cylinder gets as good or even better fuel mileage as the old Johnson 35 2 cylinder I use to run, but I keep RPMs down around 4K-4.5K for normal cruising.

I am not sure about the Suzuki's though, but should be similar.
The newer motors have had some design changes from the real old stuff and seem more fuel efficient
Just an opinion, no proof

I'm thinking it HAS to be just as efficient as my 1975 Evinrude 25 2 cyl, right? The Evinrude is not a true 25 because it is rated at the head and in theory not an efficient design because it is a crossflow engine, not a loop charge like the 3 cyl Suzuki. On the Evinrude, I have to keep it at Wide Open Throttle to go 26mph but with the triple Suzuki I'm thinking it will do 26mph at 3/4 throttle, working less and pushing it just as fast if not considerably faster.

The motor is a 1998 not a 2005 obviously. Typed that year in error.

Re: 3 cylinder 25 vs 2 cylinder 25 Fuel Consumption

Generally speaking, what are the pros and cons of a 2 cylinder vs 3 cylinder motor of the same brand, hp and cylinder stroke variety? For example, if you had two, 2-stroke 35hp motors where all else was equal, but one was 2 cyl. while the other was 3 cyl which would be "better" for all around performance? Just curious. Thanks.
