While changing plugs and removing the cowling on my '64 johnson trolling motor, model j.h. 19a, B101311...I messed up the setting mechanism and now I can't get the motor to run right...having to pull the choke out half way to even troll. She won't run high speed either. Seems like the brass shaft the lean-rich knob attaches to has allowed the knob to slip and I have lost the proper reference. Hope this makes sense...difficult to diagnosis with out the proper manual.

Hi ya whirlaway...

Go to your dealer and get another knob if the one you have is stripped. If the low speed needle is real real easy to turn, adj, up the packing a little. Right where the needle goes into the carb there is a packing nut. Tighten this up till you can feel resistance on the needle. Turn the needle clock wise until it is GENTLY seated. Back out 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Start the engine and warm up. Put the engine in gear and adjust low speed needle to best idle. Don't get it to lean. Once you like the idle, back the needle out about a 1/4 turn. This prevents to lean an operation.

OBJim :D

Thanks OBJim, I'll give it a try. Two differences in what you describe. One, the motor is always in gear...no shift. And two, there is only one lean - rich knob adjuster. However, I think you are on to something. I'll let ya know what happens.

Thanks again.

Hey Bear,

Thanks for the tip on the website. The photo dang near looks like my wee-motor. I wasn't aware that the parts are so readily available. Hopefully, I won't be needing too many parts for awhile. But thanks.
