3HP 1966 lightwin 3602e folding motor got this spring. Did a carb rebuild with OMC kit. Motor runs great for 2-3 hours then will only run with choke and only run slow. If i clean the carb it runs good for 2-3 hours again. I don't have a lot of experience on why this keeps happening. I am wondering if something from tank or fuel line is clogging the carb. Would that be the most likely source? I just looked at the fuel filter and it looked OK but should I clean or replace it? Any advice will be appreciated. thanks.

Many carburetors are rebuilt for no reason at all.-----Not sure why that item is picked on by some folks.-----Have you looked at fuel supply ?----Filter in the tank outlet ?----Looked at the coils under the flywheel ?----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" on both leads ?----Have you done a compression test ?----Have you looked at the impeller for the water pump ?

If you can tell anything about the fuel filter by looking at it, you are a better man than I am. That motor has a sintered filter that is meant to be replaced rather than cleaned. Yeah, I know some people claim they can clean it. Anyhoo, at least disconnect the fuel line and check the flow with the tank less than half full.

2nd on the list is the ignition coils. If they haven't already been replaced, they need to be.

Along with what the others have said, take a look at the fuel line. If you've been using gas with ethanol the line can start to break down and put debris into the carb.

As a rule when fixing a problem on a unknown outboard this its my approach. Check compression ,new spark plugs OEM gaped, fuel filter and lines, fuel pump and clean fuel tank. Fresh REC90 fuel , Impeller and lower unit oil. Check spark. proper oil/fuel mix. If coil older than 10 years replace them and coil wires to.Check all electrical connections. After that you just completed routine maintenance and if a problem persist then carb rebuilt. Its not about luck, its process of elimination.

Sounds to me like a filthy fuel tank with a broken/missing filter sending debris to the carburetor. Rig a fuel line from the tank to the carb with a inline filter.

Another option is to install the fuel pump that was offered.-----Run with a 2 gallon tank.-----Yes if you have a 66 model there is a spot provided on the block and ready to mount that little square fuel pump.-----Remove the plug for the pressure pulse and mount pump with 2 screws and a gasket.
