Just wondering when dropping the lower unit if the shift linkage just slides out or is there a fastner I need to remove before seperating it?

Also, if anyone can tell me, where you see the oil running down, is that the water pickup hole?

model J3RETB
serial B 09007410

Tks,

Bradster

Re: 3 HP Johnson LU

I thought you were being ignored.

If you follow Rick's link to the gearcase diagram you will see that the lower end of the shift rod just passes through a bush and an O ring seal and is not retained in the LU. It is one piece the top of which is attached to the bell crank on the shift lever and retained by a pin. You can see the details in the mid section diagram but it is only accessible if the power head is removed from the leg. So it will pull out of the LU

Not at all sure about the hole in the photo. Just a drain hole I think and the black gungy oil running from it just partly burnt oil from the fuel mix. (maybe a drain above the seal and bush for the shift rod)

If that is a water inlet then oil running from it would be LU oil and escaping via a defective drive shaft seal below the pump. If that were black you'd have some problems to sort out!
