Hi! all,
I have a 3 hp Johnson 1960 Mod# jh19a that I put a new carb kit in. Checked points and cleaned and gapped.(they looked good) . the coils were cracked and not so good looking. I am getting spark to both plugs but not a terrific spark. My question is this. I can pull and pull on rope with choke out(its getting gas) but it won't fire. It will fire for about 3 seconds if I put some gas in the plug holes but not all the time. Am I getting too weak of a spark to start it? (new coils) or do I need to replace the points and condensors? The carb was also thoroughly cleaned before putting in the carb kit. Thanks for any help John

Not clear if you replaced the cracked coils. They will fail if not replaced. If re-using plug wires, cut off 1/2" before screwing 'em into your new coils-for a positive connection. Good luck!

No I didn't replace the coils because it had spark on both plugs but not very strong. My question was would this make the motor hard to start or not start at all? And thanks for the plug wire info I will do that. John

If your coils are cracked and such you are most likely getting leakage to the stator plate, this would distort the current flow to the plugs and could cause weakened spark in the cylinders, If they are cracked its time for new ones, condensers do not often go bad but the are cheap, buy new points and save the old ones as spares. This should fix the problem as long as there is good compression in the cylinders.
cheers.

Yea, I totally agree with the above. Put new coils in that bugger and you'll have spark strong enough to knock a bull elephant on his behind.
