# 3 is dead

The saga continues....<br /><br />Took my boat out again this weekend, only to find out that the number 3 cylinder on my 1980 115 hp Johnson had no spark.<br /><br />The shop has just replaced the coils. I tried swopping plugs/leads around etc, but there is just no spark. The shop said they tested the CDI and it was fine (This was before they replaced the coils). #1 fires OK. Does this mean the CDI is OK?<br /><br />Any direction would be appreciated.<br /><br />Stephen

Stephen.....take the coil leads from the power pack and reverse them. These are the orange/blue stripe lead (upper coil) and the orange/green stripe lead (lower coil). Test for spark again.<br /><br />If the spark is still on the upper (No 1) cylinder, replace the spark plug on No 3 cylinder.<br /><br />If the spark has moved from No 1 cylinder to No 3 cylinder, then either the power pack is bad or the timer base (under the flywheel) is bad. The wrench checking the system should have checked the output from the timer base.<br /><br />Keep us updated.

The Mechanic has just phoned me and said the CDI (power pack) is faulty. Can a power pack fail so that it only fires on one of its two cylinders or is it most likely a problem with the timer base?<br /><br />Stephen

Yep...power pack can half fail.
