Hello Everyone,

What's the best way to repair this 3" long gash in the gelcoat?

Thanks,
Paul

Hello Guys,

Woodonglass. It is a horizontal gash across the chine. While I can't prove it, I believe that the marina may have done this while lifting the boat and transporting it to storage.

If this had occurred while I was underway, the vessel would have had to lift up and then come directly down on to something to create a horizontal gash under the hull on the flat surface of the chine which I believe to be an unlikely scenario. Vandalism is also a remote possibility as well.

Thanks

Uhmmm what I meant was, how deep is it? Can you see exposed glass fibers? Is the surrounding gel cracked? Some better close up pics would be nice

Oh my, this does bring back some ugly memories from my second boat. I bought a Hydro Bass Glass Stream bass boat and loved it. I cared for it with kid gloves...literally! About the second or third time I took it out, I didn't notice that the right hand side of the alignment roller to help center the boat as you drove in on the trailer had come off thereby exposing the very sharp squared off metal edge. And when I was driving the boat back on the trailer, it hit the metal edge gashing about a 8" gash down the side of the hull. OMG, I was livid! The gash was about a 1/4" deep and since the hull was metallic reddish maroon, I had no way to fix it. I didn't know a professional probably could have, so I lived with it until I sold it. And that was the only flaw on the entire boat when it sold too... Seems the vibration of trailering the boat to the lake caused the speed cap to come off and the roller top was gone. So I fixed that issue by threading the roller center rods and installing 1/2" x 20tpi lock nuts. But only after rounding over every sharp edge on that trailer. Never had anymore issues again...

WOG will surely be able to help you with your gashed area if anybody can... He is such a pro! Just give him the info and wait for his suggestions!

Thanks for the Kudo's gm280 but...I'm no Pro, just an Old Dumb Okie trying to Help when and where I can. Passing on the Knowledge I've gleaned here on the forum over the years I've been hangin' out here on the forum and from past experiences.;):D

Thanks Woodonglass I will be up to my boat in about 3 weeks (it's in at a marina about 200 miles of my home). I'll gather that info and tighter pics and post them here at that time.

Rickryder, thanks for the tip.

Hard to tell from the existing pics, however it doesnt look like its thru the gel, or into the fiberglass. it simply looks like a gouge in the gel. if this is the case, a bit of sand-paper to clean the gouge, wipe with acetone, use a gel repair kit (available here on iBoats), apply repair gel. let cure, then wetsand and buff.

Thanks Scott,

Sorry for the delayed response. I was out of town for the holidays. I believe it is just a gouge. I will be up to the boat in a couple of weeks and make a closer inspection and hopefully get some better pics. I will post them then...Thanks everyone!
