Hi everyone,

3 mercruiser engine swap questions:

1. I know that mercruiser’s are designed to be the ‘plug and play’ with the wire harness on the one plug. Are all of the plugs universal with each other – like, will a 3.0 plug match a 4.3 plug and a 5.0 and 5.7? Could you plug a 3.0’s plug into a 5.7 and all of the wires would be the same? (if all of the engines are close to the same year).

2. If I pull my 1985 5.7 liter mercruiser, would a 1989 5.7 mercruiser full engine package (from a donor boat) bolt right up to it? If not, what would need to be changed to make a 1989 engine go fit where a 1985 engine was.

3. If I were to put 3.0 liter mercruiser where there was a 5.7 liter, what modifications to the hull would have to be made? I’m assuming that the rear of the engine would bolt up the same, but the 5.7’s are on stringers, the 3.0 has the front bracket. Would I have to cut away the stringers to fit the 3.0? Would it take anything special to bolt in the front 3.0 bracket?

I’m just curious as to these because the donor boat is a small & overpowered boat and I need it’s engine for a larger boat (to replace my 5.7) But, I have a 3.0 that could possibly go into the donor boat if I chose to restore it.

1. That round plug is the same on all models.
2. Yes
3. Exhaust tube would need to be changed, gear ratio in the drive changed. Stringers could stay, but a cross piece for the front mount would have to be glassed in.
This would not be a good option. Unless all you do is trolling. If a boat came with a 5.7, you will NEVER get any type of performance with a 3.0.

Ayuh,...... I Agree on All points.......

That Donor boat would be worth More as Parts,.....
Rather than refitting it with the 3.0l.......

Thank you for your responses. I was most interested to make sure that the 1989 would bolt right into my 1985 with no problems.

To be honest, I think I'm just going to buy a remanufactured 5.7 longblock and swap all of my bolt ons onto it. I found a couple of places here in Florida that sell the reman 5.7 for around $1500. That's the same price I'd pay for the donor boat with the used 5.7.

Sounds Reasonable,.........

'Course,........
You Could buy the Donor boat,+ Bone it Out..........

You Get a Complete Spare Driveline,.... Complete,....Even All the little pieces........
And, ..
A Dressed 3.0l is worth between $500.00,+ $1500.00, if it Runs.......
Depending on how Desperate the New Owner is...........

If you didn't want to keep the Spare Parts laying around,.....
You'd be looking at making a Profit.............

I was thinking the same thing. But, time may become a factor and my wife would probably get onto me for taking on too many projects at once...we'll see though..

I thought the 1985 motor had a 2 piece rear main and the from 1987 up had a one piece rear main making the two motors different I think you would need and reman from the late 70's to 1986
