I have a 3 wire tilt and trim unit that has a bad pump. Can I replace it with a 2 wire pump I have as a spare? If so would it be just a bolt on swap? MY engine has a 2 wire tilt and trim that is in bad shape but the pump is still good. In would like to swap the pump and use the other unit. Is it possible or is it just wishful thinking?

2 wire and 3 wire PTT motors are wound differently.

2 wire PTT pump motors use relays to supply power and ground to a common winding. 3 wire PTT pumps use solenoids to supply power to separate ends of the winding, while the center of the winding is always grounded.

If you want to swap out a 3 wire motor and replace it with a 2 wire motor you need to swap out the solenoids and replace with relays. There are some other wiring changes that also need to happen. A lot of times, 2 wire motors intended to replace 3 wire motors come with the relays and wiring harness.

Chris.... His question pertains to the oil pump, not the electric motor... or at least, that's how I took it.
