I have a 1987 30 hp evinrude pull start motor. I can start it out of water for a second after about 5 pulls and then it will start in the water but if i don't do this first it is very hard to start . I know this is bad for the water pump. The carb was rebuilt in the fall but it is no better. any ideas?

Im new to boats and outboards but the simplest thing i can think of is...is it in neutral?? sounds stupid but that would deff. make it hard to start in water... Again, I have no clue just a thought... :)

David, I have had top remind myself to shift into neutral before stareting the outboard myself:confused:

what is your starting procedure for this outboard? In the FAQ section is starting procedures for outboards, review them and see if this helps.

As far as starting easy out of the water, there is no back pressure on the exhaust so it will start and idle higher. In the water there is back pressure so it takes a little more to start it.

Make sure your choke is closing all the way shut or you wil not get enough fuel into the cyl when pull starting it.

Nice to know copmpression numbers also.

It is in neutral. I noticed when i open the throttle all the way the choke only opens a little bit. Is that normal?

first you need to understand your motor. it does not have a choke butterfly. that is the throttle butterfly in the barrel. in neutral, there is a lock out, to keep from reving the motor too high. you motor has a manual primer that you pump, like a lawn mower. black rubber push button. this injest fuel into the motor for starting.

procedure, neutral, pump fuel line bulb till hard, now pump primer 3 or 4 times. turn throttle hand as far as if will go in neutral, pull rope, should start by the 3rd pull. on land or in the water.

Thanks. The procedure you describe is what i do. The throttle butterfly does not open more than 1/4 inch when i turn the throttle all the way. Is this normal? The motor will start much easier out of water. What can i try to make it start on 3-4 pulls .

TD has it exactly right.

If your starting procedure is the same as TD said then there isn't much else you can do. You could try new plugs or rebuilding the carb again, but I doubt it will make much difference. Did you rebuild the carb or have a mechanic do it?

Try spraying some 50:1 premix in the carb and then pull it. If it runs for a few secs then your fuel system needs work.

Thanks again but does anyone know if butterfly should be all the way open (horizontal) with the throttle all the way open .If so then i see there is a slide adjustment screw that i could adjust to make it open. A mechanic did my carburetor

in neutral no, but in gear yes, it should be horizonal.
