I want to replace my water pump this weekend. Can I put the boat in the water right away or do I have to wait for gasket sealant to dry first. And if so how long.

You can put the engine in the water as soon as you finish.

Re: 30 hp evinrude water pump.

I have a 35 Evinrude, 1981. The water pump was not working so I replaced it. I still don' t get water flow. Ran wire through tattle tale, ok, removed unit again and checked impeller and key, ok, put all back together, water connection from lower unit is connected. Still no water pumping. Help, Ideas? Jerry, pull the lower unit off and run a water hose over the water tube to force water up the leg of the motor and out the tell tale. If water is circulating through the the engine and nothing is clogged(you can also try to reverse the water flow with the water hose and hold the hose up to the tell tale and see if it comes out of the water tube) then you either A.) don't have the water tube lining up correctly with the water pump B.) Your water inlets on your lower unit may be clogged and your water pump can't pick up the water or C.) you have a bad impeller( a lot of times a bad impeller may look good, but the fins on it are so soft and flexible that they don't pump water correctly). I recommend replacing the impeller. Hope this helps and give us feedback when you figure it out. Thanks

Thanks! :) I had already replaced the impeller and it still would not pump. Last night, I removed the lower unit (again) and pieced together some hoses to allow a good fit, and ran water up the tube of the (lower area) mid section to the engine. Then ran the engine and water flowed and the tattle tale - well, tattled! :) Seems that the impeller just is not pumping. Today, I intend to take the unit to my local dealer (North Shore Marine-on Uvalde Road) and get a new housing and even show it to them. Mark - at North Shore Marine, has been doing this stuff for years and they are great to deal with. I am guessing, that when the previous impeller burned up - due to being run out of water - the housing was scored, so time to replace it. OR, I want to carefully take a drill to the shaft and force the impeller to turn and hopefully pump. I will be extra careful NOT to damage the splines that go up to the power head. I will wrap something around the splines to protect them from damage and then will rotate the shaft that rotates the impeller, forcing water out the pump hole. ALL OF THIS, with a portion of the lower unit IN WATER, allowing proper operation, again, hopefully. Thanks -

Also, to those that are putting this unit back together, PULL UP ON THE GEAR SHIFT "before" reinstalling the lower unit. This will allow that smaller shaft to be in a better position for alignment with the shifter where the bolt goes to allow shifting. You can then shift the boat into forward to allow the line up and stabbing of the shift rod. NOW, the lower unit MUST be almost completely tight to get the shift rod bolt to hold. Yes, I discovered this the hard way. :) Once the entire lower unit has been tightened, this shift rod bolt will go where needed, and hold. DON"T EVER forget to align the water hoses from the pump towards the engine, tight - but not difficult. I consider the water pump on the 1980's Evinrude engines to be a simple fix, (generally) and if you own a few tools, MOST folks should be able to complete this task with a friend - over a six-pack. : ) Jerry in Texas WHERE WE BOAT MOST OF THE YEAR!
