30 hp Powerhead search

Hello everyone,<br /><br />I have been a johny/rude owner for years and a friend of mine just gave me a 1995 Yamaha 30hp longshaft model# 30ELF code 6J8 L. So now I'm a Yamaha man. Ahhh brand loyalty. <br /><br />I would like to know what powerhead options are out there for a 30hp Yamaha from 1995. Will a short shaft powerhead fit, different years, different hp, etc... Also where is a good place to get a used one? I used twin citys outboards for my johny/rude stuff. <br /><br />The current powerhead was taken out by a piston rod so I don't think it would be cost effective to rebuild.<br /><br />Thanks for your help

with no model number its impossible to answer. and I am still not sure what your trying to do. is the block damaged? is the crank damaged ?<br /> exactly what are you attempting?

Rodbolt,<br /><br />I've been told that the piston rod busted loose from the piston and went through the cylinder wall. I am looking to replace the powerhead but I wanted to know what year and HP powerheads I can do this with. All the parts are is still there, all I need is a new block. The model # is 30ELF with a "code 6J8 L" whatever that means? I will be picking the motor up in a few weeks. I just wanted to get a jump start on the project. <br /><br />Thanks

ELF indicates its an 89 2 cylinder 30 hp. the crank is a built up type. the cranks are rebuidable. if the block is not busted into a water jacket it can be sleeved. best to tear it down and inspect what ya got.<br />yamaha does put out an interchange guide on power heads and lower units.

Thanks Rodbolt. I would say that the previous owner was way off about the year. I will pick it up mothersday weekend. I'l do a tear down then. Any sugestions on what manual to get? <br /><br />I like the thought of not having to buy another powerhead. <br /><br />Thanks.
